IDG Contributor Network: The case for data-centric audit and protection in the Information Age

There was a time at the beginning of the Information Age when a firewall was the best way to protect your data. The name itself evokes an image of an impenetrable wall of fire, not unlike a tactic used by feudal lords as they directed archers to shoot flaming arrows down upon their enemies. However, like the castles of the past, firewalls became obsolete as new technologies emerged and evolved.

The next three stages of development in the Information Age saw the development of information security concepts including the net, which managed data in and around the firewall; the extranet, which managed data through the firewall; and access, which managed data through identity management and access control (IAM).
