Possibly migrating from Milestone xProtect to Blue Iris?

I am a network engineer and am helping a good friend out with the existing network for their small business. Id like some advice on security cameras and the required software for them. They have 5 AXIS cameras and a screen recorder on one PC all feeding video into a Windows 7 file server running Milestone xProtect 2016. The owner wants to be able to view the live cameras from his iphone and be able to do playback on the server if needed. Recently, his phone’s xProtect mobile app stopped working with the server and the server has not recorded/archived and video in the last month so there are some issues with the server that I cannot figure out.

I dont know much about security cameras or Milestone software. I heard Blue Iris was good software so I am thinking of doing a fresh install of Windows 10 and Blue Iris on the server. Have any of you gone from Milestone xProtect to Blue Iris? Does Blue Iris have a good mobile app?

Explain it to someone who doesn’t understand cybersecurity

Let’s say that Joe has it’s credentials stolen, maybe with a phishing campaign.

Joe has a work computer and he connects via VPN to work. He has access to the software he needs to do his job only, he’s not an admin.

How do you hackers use his credentials to exploit the company’s network?

Remember you’re explaining it to someone without experience or security background.

TIA
