Odd file encryption within RAR file

A couple decades ago (I know – I was cleaning out some old files and found my repository) I subscribed to a “book of the month” club. The way the club worked is they would email you a RAR file and the PDF books in the RAR file were password protected. You could open the RAR file, see the book titles, but if you tried to extract them, you would get a password prompt. If you wanted to purchase one of the books, you would submit your funds and they would send you the password. I quickly realized that all the books in the RAR file had the same password. Pretty poor system and fairly weak security. Anyway, the company is long gone and their email address and domain are also long gone, but I’d like to extract some of these books. I have an idea of the password format, so that’s a huge advantage, but the popular RAR password crackers don’t seem to support this style of archive. It analyzes the RAR and determines it is not password protected and bombs out.

I have tried several RAR password programs. I have tried: RAR Password Cracker, Passfab, iSunshare, Passper. All with similar (failing) results.

Anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks.
