Is DDosing really that easy?

I’m learning about network vulnerabilities and I can’t help but stop thinking of the times back in the day getting booted offline playing R6S. I finally passed OSI and TCP/IP and finally understand how that works as a CS student.

My questions are 1. How does DDoSing work in terms of what is overloading my network to the point of explosion? What exactly is being sent to my network what layer are the attacks happening at and how does it affect my network/how does it respond

  1. How easy is it to perform a ddos attack. Do people even need to understand how a network functions to perform one. I guess what I’m trying to say is was I being DDoS by script kiddies that literally only knew how to IP grab and use a tool or does ddosing require a bit more skill/work
