Spoofing on whatsapp?

I work in a real estate sales management company, and today one of my coworkers received a whatsapp message saying something like this:

“Hello, (NAME OF THE COMPANY) thanks you for contacting us. Which one of our products are you interested in?”

So basically impersonating our company. Using the number I was able to find his personal information, did some research and the owner of the line lives in the same city as I do.

I contacted him on whatsapp and said that if he didn’t explain why he was impersonating our company I would make a police report. I said that and sent the screenshots of his number and the messages he sent.

He said that he wasn’t sending any messages and was actually at work. I then confirmed with him if the number from the screenshots was his and he said it was his personal number.

I’ve never heard of spoofing on whatsapp, is it possible? Is there any way this guy is telling the truth or should I just proceed with the police report?

Please forgive any mistakes, english is not my first language
