Home security option for remote property
Hi – new poster here but I’ve been spending the last few days trying to figure out a camera solution for a family member and I wanted to confirm my options.
I’m looking for a camera solution that involves 2-3 cameras covering the outside of a rural/remote property. Two on the main property, one on a secondary building. Main constraints I’m working with are:
- Internet is 4G, and upload speeds are sometimes 1Mbps or slower (so I think a cloud solution will be unreliable)
- House wiring is copper phone jacks, could run PoE for the cameras inside the house but not to the secondary building.
- I could run AC power to all camera locations.
- Family are okay with smart home devices, but won’t suit anything too customised/techy – I’m not always nearby to make changes to the setup.
- Using 4G cameras will involve a monthly cost for data (I’d like to avoid monthly costs).
I’ve mostly been looking at Reolink and Arlo because I’m familiar with those brands. Am I right that my choices will narrow down to:
- Localised storage via NVR if I use PoE or Wifi+AC power, but not if the cameras are battery/solar powered?
- Access to localised storage from on-board SD card if I use battery/solar options, but it will be motion-sensor data only and no backup for the SD card.
- If we did take on the monthly cost of 4G cameras, I could possible have ongoing recording to the NVR?
If that’s the state of things at the moment, then I know what I’ll choose. I just want to check I haven’t missed an obvious solution.
