I finished a Masters in Physics with focus on quantum information and quantum cryptography. I published a paper on quantum cryptography and gave numerous talks on the subject on private hacker cons. Generally I can do a lot of other stuff as well but I really do like math and small mathematical riddles. They bring my mind to peace.

I am interested in other things as well and don’t know what to do with my career. I get tons of requests from consulting to data science to quantum information but one of my favorites is cryptography.

Problem is – cryptography sometimes is heavily export restricted and I don’t want to break any law.

Who would hire a cryptographer (can work into nearly any part of it, my main focus is quantum cryptography and post quantum cryptography, but I can work into the normal stuff as well)?

For me the important thing is that whatever I do is legal and doesn’t break the law. Working for the state would be fine as well. Research has bad payment in Europe so that one is out of the question for me.

Most people at scientific conferences tell me – research is fine, no problem there. The hacker scene is way more paranoid – but the degree ranges from super paranoid to okayish. And what could I expect as salary?

The alternatives would be to tutor students or to do data science stuff. Or stay in quantum computing until the bubble bursts.
