Cost Comparison of DIY Installation vs Security Company
I am reseraching security system for my house and speaking with local security vendors. While DIY option is appealing to my inside nerd, I am trying to get a good understanding of the price differences
- I got a “Christmas” quote from a vendor for Qolsys + 3 sensors + 1 motion + 1 camera for 3-year contract at $45/m, including installation. This is $1,620 for the duration of contract, I keep equipment at the end.
- Similar equipment package will cost me about $500 with DIY install, with cell monitoring at about $35/m and self-monitoring starting at $10, with year costs $1,760 to $860 (alarmgrid.com)
It seems that with cell monitoring it’s cheaper to go with security vendor. However, I forgot to ask them if I can add additional sensors to the panel, or it will be locked and I have to go through the vendor.
Any thoughts of advantages or disadvantages to either approach?
