Self-hosted Home Security solution : understanding the basics

Hi,

I bought a house recently, and I’m trying to wrap my mind around the various options regarding self-hosted home security solutions (I am not willing to pay some kind of overpriced subscription).

The plan is to install several cameras, motions sensors, and whatever could be useful. Indoor & outdoor. And get somehow notified on my phone (sms / calls / whatever) when something is moving while I’m away.

I am very new to all these topics, and I am failing to understand the “big picture”.

Here is my understanding so far :

I need :

  • of course cameras & sensors (+ of course they need to be somehow powered)
  • a monitoring software (I’ve just found out about iSpyConnect for instance… I understand that it has to be compatible with the cameras deployed of course)
  • some notification software like IFTTT that can integrated with the monitoring software
  • a way to run these softwares without turning on my own computer (I guess a Raspberry PI)
  • a place to store the videos (like a SSD plugged on my internet router I guess, or on the raspberryPI)

Am I missing something ?

In particular, I’m afraid to buy some cameras, only to discover a few days or weeks later that it won’t work as as I wanted to… because I missed some details while buying them.

If you have any “eagle view” resource on this topic, please share 🙂

Thanks
