I’m rewatching Mr. Robot at the moment and I’m always fascinated by the car robbery scene in S1. I understand the car locking/unlocking and how that works, there’s lots of videos and talks out there that go into great detail. I’d like to learn more about controlling a car through it’s OBD2 port. Although it varies between vehicles, in most cases it seems possible to start a vehicles engine or turn the wheel if it’s electronically steered. I also know vehicle ECUs use proprietary software and there’s no universal command to send these controls.

I’m wondering, similarly to how there’s a community that dumps arcade machine BIOS files for emulation, is there a community that dumps OBD2 codes for vehicles? If not, I think that would be a hobby I’d like to dip my toe in. Possibly buy some cheap ECUs from a scrap yard to experiment with and see where it takes me. But first, baby steps. Any resources to learn the fundamentals of OBD2 would be great!
