Hamas has released seven Israeli hostages into the custody of the Red Cross, the first batch to be released as part of the US-backed ceasefire deal. There was no immediate information on their condition.
Hamas was set to release all surviving hostages on Monday in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, as US President Donald Trump headed to the region for a peace summit having declared the war “over”.
A total of 48 captives held by Hamas since 7 October 2023 are set to be released, with 20 thought to be alive. Israel is set to free over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners in return.
The organization has escorted hundreds of people to freedom, but it says it also does important diplomatic work behind the scenes.
