I’ve been spec’ing out a new camera system and went down a rabbit hole on PIR-equipped IP cameras — mainly Hikvision’s cube line (DS-2CD2443G2-I and similar) and a few outdoor bullet models.
The pitch is obvious: hardware-level heat detection to filter out false alarms from cars, shadows, wind-blown leaves, etc. But I keep wondering whether this is still solving a real problem in 2026, given how far AI-based video analytics have come.
Some questions I’m genuinely unsure about:
– With AcuSense, Dahua’s SMD, and similar AI human/vehicle classification now baked into mid-range cameras, is a dedicated PIR sensor still adding meaningful value — or is it redundant?
– The onboard PIR range on most cameras caps out around 10–11m. For outdoor use cases beyond that, is the only real option to wire an external PIR to the alarm input anyway?
– Are there use cases where PIR still clearly wins over AI detection in 2026? (Low-light environments? Battery-powered cameras? Edge cases?)
– Any brands other than Hikvision and NOVUS that still actively develop cameras with true onboard PIR rather than just AI classification?
Curious to hear from anyone running hybrid setups (PIR + AI) or who has switched away from PIR entirely. What’s your current take?
