CredibleDefense Daily MegaThread April 24, 2023

The r/CredibleDefense daily megathread is for asking questions and posting submissions that would not fit the criteria of our post submissions. As such, submissions are less stringently moderated, but we still do keep an elevated guideline for comments.

* Try to push narratives, or fight for a cause in the comment section, or try to ‘win the war,’

* Engage in baseless speculation, fear mongering, or anxiety posting. Question asking is welcome and encouraged, but questions should focus on tangible issues and not groundless hypothetical scenarios. Before asking a question ask yourself ‘How likely is this thing to occur.’ Questions, like other kinds of comments, should be supported by evidence and must maintain the burden of credibility.

Please read our in depth rules https://reddit.com/r/CredibleDefense/wiki/rules.

Also please use the report feature if you want a comment to be reviewed faster. Don’t abuse it though! If something is not obviously against the rules but you still feel that it should be reviewed, leave a short but descriptive comment while filing the report.

Any sign of Deep Battle/Operations by the Russians in Ukraine?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_operation

By Russian doctrine and history they should have forces somewhere to exploit Bakmuht. Holding operations go both ways, right? In theory the Ukrainians are just as pinned as the Russians are. So if their history/doctrine is anything to go by:

A) there is at least one Operational Maneuver Group massing somewhere. This can be at the flanks of current operations for a Operation Uranus style encirclement or behind the front to exploit a breakthrough.

B) there’s a Bagration style maskirovka where the OMG is actually somewhere else, facing weak Ukrainian forces. Belarus maybe? This would fit in very well with Deep Operations’ advocacy of sequential operations in multiple fronts.

Questions I have:

A) Are there signs of significant build ups of mobile forces or enhanced logistics somewhere? Is the sign of decreased ammunition for Wagner and reduced artillery strikes an indication they are actually hoarding their ammo someplace else?

B) Do we know if the Russians have managed to husband their higher quality mobile formations? I mean specifically what trained manpower they may or may not still have. They may have just pinned the Ukranians with the expendable Wagner and recently mobilized recruits.

The various internet military guys may have been looking with their satellite images in the wrong places and the Russian tanks are not in their parks but massing somewhere else.

Also, Russian highlighting of their Bakmuht offensive and its lack of success is a great way to focus attention and lull their opponents into a false sense of security. Hell, their parading of doubtfully functional T-62s and -’55s may be cover for their -90s and Armatas being someplace else. Have we even seen these older tanks at the front or are images of them on flatcars ostentatiously being “leaked?”

A lot of my questions also hinge on successful maskirovka. Is such operational deception even still possible with Western surveillance and intelligence gathering abilities? I don’t know the modern techniques for masking forces from satellite reconnaissance.
