We bought a house last month and the seller left the security system for us. After looking into what we’d need to do in order to use it, we found out how much it could cost and on top of all our other bills and new mortgage we definitely don’t want it. The previous seller apparently put a request in to cancel her contract but they haven’t done that yet, so it’s still operating under her name. She told me that they’re waiting for us to make the call to transfer the contract over to us.

To make matters worse, it includes a thermostat, which keeps breaking down. The first time I thought it was just because it needed new batteries, but it just shut down again a few minutes ago, about three weeks after changing them out. Both times it happened after I tried to switch from cool to heat. This is becoming a major fucking pain in the ass and I want it GONE.

I don’t know what to expect if I try to call them and tell them we don’t want it. I would like to hope since we have nothing with them that they would just come pick up the equipment or something. I’m afraid they’ll try to make us pay off whatever’s left to pay for the equipment if there is anything.

What can I do here?
