The Devil, his minions, and those in whom he is at work (Ephesians 2:1ff.) are full of godless pride, a pride that leads them to oppose and adulterate the gospel in a way that leaves room for human boasting in salvation. Luther often said godly mockery and scoffing is a good weapon against the enemy of our souls for pride can’t stand to be laughed at. According to Scripture, God Himself laughs and scoffs at the wicked (Psalm 2), and so do his servants (e.g. 1 Kings 18).
