Long heralded a national public health asset, CDC has suffered a sharp decline in popular trust and confidence, a signal of widespread concern over its performance in preventing and responding, at home and abroad, to dangerous outbreaks. The United States needs a strong, effective, and more accountable national public health agency to protect the health of all Americans and ensure the stability of the broader world.The CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security released Building the CDC the Country Needs, a detailed report with actionable recommendations for CDC’s performance in preventing and responding to dangerous outbreaks. Prior to joining CSIS, Mr. Johnstone served in government for 25 years in a variety of senior positions with a focus on U.S. policy toward Japan and the Indo-Pacific. He served twice on the National Security Council, as director for East Asia under President Biden and director for Japan and Oceanian affairs under President Obama (2014–2016). In the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Mr. Johnstone led offices with responsibility for South and Southeast Asia (2017–2021) and East Asia (2016–2017); he was director for Northeast Asia from 2010 to 2014, where he had principal responsibility for developing strategy for the U.S.-Japan alliance. Mr. Johnstone began his career as an intelligence officer in the Central Intelligence Agency, where he worked on national security issues in Northeast Asia and served in an overseas field station. Mr. Johnstone has a master’s in public affairs from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and a bachelor of arts from Swarthmore College. The CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development invites you to attend the launch event of the CSIS Ukraine Economic Reconstruction Commission’s report, Enabling an Economic Transformation of Ukraine: Recovery, Reconstruction, and Modernization. The aim of the report is to focus specifically on the critical role of private sector investment in Ukraine’s economic reconstruction, and how the private sector, both within Ukraine and internationally, can enable Ukraine to win the peace. It provides a short overview of the economic challenges facing Ukraine, including governance, the sectors that will be critical to Ukraine’s reconstruction, the roles and responsibilities for the G7, EU, IFIs, and DFIs, and then recommendations for how Ukraine and its partners can best attract private sector investment.The event will feature opening remarks from Sergiy Tsivkach, the CEO of UkraineInvest. Synopsys estimates 97% of software contains open source code that can be viewed, used, modified, and redistributed under an open license. Governments across the globe understand the potential of open source software and since the early 2000s have implemented policies to utilize open source software as a tool for modernization, sovereignty, and economic development. A recent study by the European Commission found that open source software contributed upwards of €95 billion to annual GDP in the European economy and its widespread adoption globally makes open source software a key driver of innovation. A series of recent legislative and executive actions, such as the proposed Securing Open Source Software Act and the Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity, have put the focus in the U.S. on open source software. A CSIS project explored government action on open source software from around the world, compiling a database of national policies, strategies, directives, bills, programs and more dating back to 1999. This event will discuss the project’s findings and the future of open source software policies. Please join the Renewing American Innovation Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for a discussion of Chris Miller’s new book Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology. CSIS Senior Adviser, Charles Wessner, will be joined by Chris Miller to discuss the decades-long battle to control what has emerged as the world’s most critical resource- microchip technology -with the United States and China increasingly in conflict. Chris Miller is Associate Professor of International History at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He also serves as Jeane Kirkpatrick Visiting Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Eurasia Director at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and as Director at Greenmantle, a New York and London-based macroeconomic and geopolitical consultancy. He received a PhD in history from Yale University and a BA in history from Harvard University. Charles Wessner is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he teaches global innovation policy while also serving as a senior adviser (non-resident) to the CSIS Renewing American Innovation Program. He served for two decades as a National Academies scholar, where he founded and directed the National Academy of Sciences’ Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Program. At the National Academies, Dr. Wessner’s research addressed the importance of semiconductor research and production to innovation and national security. He is a leading U.S. expert on Sematech, the U.S. semiconductor consortium, and the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which provides awards to promising small businesses and start-ups. Chris Miller’s Chip War shows that, to make sense of the current state of politics, economics, and technology, we must first understand the vital role played by chips.
