It’s not a job for the faint of heart. The volunteer will get into the crawl space with the bear, get behind the massive animal and scare him by yelling, clapping and sometimes firing a paintball gun.

In the name of science and animal welfare, the county worker will whistle, use baby talk, dangle treats and she’ll coo — like a pigeon. All to find homes for dogs and cats.
