Thousands of people rallied across Canada on Friday to mark 365 days of death and violence since Russia’s invasion began in Ukraine.
The federal government’s announcement comes as G7 nations ready a fresh round of sanctions on Russia, which started the war on Feb. 24, 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used the Feb. 24 anniversary to congratulate Ukrainians on their resilience in the face of Europe’s biggest and deadliest war since World War II.
Just before dawn on Feb. 24 of last year, Russia began its invasion in Ukraine. One year later, Ukrainians living in Canada say they still carry the consequences.
China has called for a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia and the opening of peace talks as part of a 12-point proposal to end the conflict.
“This resolution is a powerful signal of unflagging global support for Ukraine,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after the vote.
Ukraine’s central bank unveiled a commemorative banknote to mark the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion, with one side depicting three soldiers raising the national flag.
