I recently purchased the Night Owl DP8 DVR Security System. After setting it up and ensuring everything works, and it did, I came to the realization that any remote connection to the DVR (Computer or phone through there software even on the local network) has to go though their servers utilizing the internet.
This is great for those that want it set up and working right away but I personally enjoy not having to rely on a third party outside of my home to check my camera system. For example, if my internet goes out but im at home, let me check my cameras. Im on my PC away from home but vpn’d into my home network for whatever reason, let me check my cameras. I know of other DVR systems I’ve used in the past that do allow connecting such as using a web browser and the IP of the device.
Before anyone says I should have chose differently, I will say the camera system had everything that I wanted, cheap + some of my required features.
I’m writing this post to ask those that maybe have night owl cameras as well and would want this feature to view locally both from a browser, or through the app with maybe a toggle to send an email to Support@nowlsp.zendesk.com (provided from Night Owl support). I figure if it is more than just me requesting that it maybe can become a reality.
Here is what I have sent if it makes those interested in requesting easier:
Hello,
I have just purchased the DP8 DVR security camera system. I also later found that to view and use the camera system on either my phone or computer, both the DVR and my device have to utilize the internet to function.
My request is if there can be an option added to the DP8 (and even all of your DVR/NVR products that once enabled in the settings, allows for local/lan access both through a web browser and allowing the user to enable local connect on the app as well.)
Reason being, I would like to view my cameras on any device during instances where my internet may go out but I am connected to my local wifi network. I also prefer to vpn into my home network for privacy reasons and not have to be dependent on Night Owls servers. I think this would make the products you sell more attractable and increase speeds for local viewing.
Please let me know if you need any more information on the feature request,
