The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

African countries are suffering the worst effects of the global food security and global climate crises. Prolonged flooding and droughts diminish agriculture and restrict access to nutritious food across sub-Saharan Africa, home to millions suffering from food insecurity and malnutrition. In partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and African Union (AU), the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Special Envoy for Global Food Security is launching the “Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS)”. The VACS initiative will seek to support African farmers, civil society organizations, and governments in their preparation for the continent’s food systems challenges posed by climate change. The multiphase VACS initiative will identify the most nutritious crops in each of the African Union’s five subregions, assess the challenges climate change is expected to pose to these crops, and seek to boost public and private investments in these crops to prepare them for the anticipated effects of climate change. How will The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils contribute to improving food security, nutrition, and soil health systems in Africa, and to addressing the larger global food crisis? What are the steps necessary for VACS to achieve these goals? What are the roles of the AU and FAO, and others, in achieving them? And what long-term impact could VACS have on reducing food insecurity and malnutrition—and addressing climate change—across Africa? Please join the CSIS Global Food Security Program on February 1 at 10:00am as we welcome the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy for Global Food Security, Dr. Cary Fowler, for a keynote presentation and moderated discussion, with special introductory remarks from Ambassador Cindy McCain, U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Agencies in Rome.CSIS is a vaccinated facility. Iranian Expert Warns E.U., U.K. against Designating the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization #JTTM #MEMRI #MEMRITV #MiddleEast #MiddleEastMediaResearchInstitute #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

Iranian expert on the Middle East Dr. Masoud Asadollahi said in a January 22, 2023 show on Al-Etejah TV (Iraq) warned that if Britain and the E.U. designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, Iran will “respond in kind.” He said that Iran could in turn designate the British army as a “terrorist army,” that the world’s fuel reserves are close to Iran, and that international supporters of Iran could retaliate, similarly to the young man who recently stabbed Salman Rushdie. Asadollahi warned against playing with fire, saying that the fire might spread all over the region and the world.

Discussion on UNODC’s Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2022 #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

For the first time in over two decades, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) documented a decrease in global trafficking victims during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, global trafficking remains a critical threat, with the pandemic opening up new avenues for exploitation and complicating typical methods of crime detection in many low- and middle-income countries. The 7th edition of the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons highlights a global struggle to detect cases of trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute perpetrators. This leaves victims with the undue responsibility of “rescuing themselves” instead of being proactively identified by law enforcement. With 2023 marking 20 years of the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons and the half-way mark for the 2030 agenda, the international community has the opportunity to refocus its efforts on fighting global trafficking and related impunity. This session will feature opening remarks by Ambassador Cindy Dyer (U.S. Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons) followed by a panel discussion on the UNODC’s 2022 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons featuring Angela Me, Ilias Chatzis, and Desirée Suo Weymont. This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.———————————————A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Mining, Climate Risks, and the Western Hemisphere #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

Join the CSIS Americas Program for a timely and important conversation on Mining, Climate Risks, and the Western Hemisphere.Rapidly growing demand for clean energy technologies has made apparent the need for a mining renaissance in order to enable the carbon transition. Many of the critical technologies needed to achieve net-zero emissions, from electric vehicles to renewable energy-capture infrastructure, all necessitate large inputs of minerals and metals. Indeed, the average electric car requires six times the mineral inputs compared to fossil fuels, while the average American is estimated to consume three million pounds of minerals, metals, and fuels over their lifetime. However, meeting demand in a sustainable and secure manner requires a critical examination of mining supply chains, from social and environmental concerns to geopolitical factors stemming from China’s dominance in mineral processing, to the long time horizons associated with identifying and scaling up new mines. This event will focus on how the United States can work with partner countries in Latin America, such as Chile and Peru, to transition to clean energy technologies for mining through development institutions and policy making. Specifically, it will focus on how the mining of resources like copper and lithium, which are necessary to produce clean energy technologies, can be extracted in a sustainable manner, and one which contributes to the economic empowerment of local communities. It will also discuss how the United States can calibrate its policy to build ecologically sustainable and socially licensed mining in Latin America. This event was made possible with the generous support of Freeport-McMoRan.———————————————A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world.
