Please join the Renewing American Innovation Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for a discussion of Chris Miller’s new book Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology. CSIS Senior Adviser, Charles Wessner, will be joined by Chris Miller to discuss the decades-long battle to control what has emerged as the world’s most critical resource- microchip technology -with the United States and China increasingly in conflict. Chris Miller is Associate Professor of International History at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He also serves as Jeane Kirkpatrick Visiting Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Eurasia Director at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and as Director at Greenmantle, a New York and London-based macroeconomic and geopolitical consultancy. He received a PhD in history from Yale University and a BA in history from Harvard University. Charles Wessner is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he teaches global innovation policy while also serving as a senior adviser (non-resident) to the CSIS Renewing American Innovation Program. He served for two decades as a National Academies scholar, where he founded and directed the National Academy of Sciences’ Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Program. At the National Academies, Dr. Wessner’s research addressed the importance of semiconductor research and production to innovation and national security. He is a leading U.S. expert on Sematech, the U.S. semiconductor consortium, and the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which provides awards to promising small businesses and start-ups. Chris Miller’s Chip War shows that, to make sense of the current state of politics, economics, and technology, we must first understand the vital role played by chips. This clip is a video of Jordanian MPs reacting to Israeli cabinet member Itamar Ben-Gvir’s recent visit to the Temple Mount Compound in Jerusalem. The video was posted to the Jordanian Parliament’s YouTube on January 4, 2023. In the video, Jordanian MP Khalil Attiyah (see MEMRI TV Clip No. 5941) said that Ben-Gvir is a “coward” and a “pig” and that Jordan’s border with Israel is a time bomb that will explode in his face. MP Muhammad Al-Shatnawi said that the Jews are one of the most cowardly nations in the world and that the Jordanians are prepared to be “martyrs” for the sake of Jerusalem and the holy places. MP Yanal Fraihat said that all Jordanians will become fedayeen and martyrdom-seekers for the sake of Palestine and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and that the “sons of apes and pigs [i.e. the Jews]” must know that the Jordanians and Palestinians will soon react to this visit with bullets. MP Asma Saleh Al-Rawahneh said that Ben-Gvir is a “mouse” and that he should not be compared to a woman, because women are strong and prepare their sons for Jihad. MP Suleiman Abu Yahya said that the Jews in Palestine must know that the tides are turning and that the day will come when Jordanians strom Tel Aviv. Canadian pro-Iranian regime activist Firas Al-Najim, who belongs to the organization CD4HR, said at a vigil held on January 2, 2023 outside the U.S. consulate in Toronto in honor of the third anniversary of the U.S. assassination of IRGC Qods Force Commander General Qasem Soleimani and PMU deputy leader Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis that Soleimani and Al-Muhandis were “martyrs” who had fought for world peace and who have been labeled as terrorist by a “misinformation media campaign”. He also led chants of “We are all Qasem Soleimani!” and “Death to America!” A video of the vigil was tweeted by Al-Najim. CD4HR organized similar vigils in 2021 and 2022.
