New world’s biggest fast food chain larger than McDonald’s is known for its 65p drinks…but you won’t have heard of it

MCDONALD’S has lost its title as the world’s biggest fast food chain after a little known company soared to the top as shoppers feel the pinch.

In just three years, China‘s Mixue Ice Cream and Tea more than doubled its locations, now having more than Starbucks and McDonald’s.

Mixue ended 2024 with 45,000 outlets across Asia and Australia compared to McDonald’s with over 43,000 and Starbucks’ 40,576.

With bubble tea and ice cream products on sale for an average of just 65p, Mixue’s popularity has soared as shoppers suffer during China’s economic slump and housing crisis.

On the menu is a selection of bubble teas, a signature ice-cream cone, and a lemonade making the company the biggest buyer of lemons in China.

Customers who visit any of the locations are greeted with the company’s mascot Snow King – a lovable snowman – and the constant ringing of Mixue’s jingle.

Its simplicity is one of the major factors of its success with basic bright-red stores selling a limited number of products.

Meanwhile, the Snow King mascot has helped boost popularity among young consumers.

With outlets across China, and 11 other countries including Thailand and Singapore, Mixue has no plans to slow down its expansion, the company said in its IPO filing.

The Zhengzhou-based company has hopes of becoming more global, the filing stated, with 90 per cent of stores in China.

China’s largest bubble tea, iced drinks, and ice cream chain operates through franchisees rather than directly having a hand in the running of its thousands of stores.

Most of its income is made by selling supplies like milk, coffee and syrups to its franchisees, charging them below average costs.

Mixue also supplies franchisees with equipment.

These efforts mean that the company has a reduced cost of procurement at around 20 per cent less than industry standards meaning it can offer its products to customers for less money.

On Monday, the company’s shares jumped by more than 40 per cent in its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

It sold 17 million shares in the deal at a fixed price of HK$202.5 each (£20.59).

The world’s largest fast food chains:

Mixue – 45,282 locations

McDonald’s – 43,477 locations

Starbucks – 40,199 locations

Subway – 36,225 locations

Investors were quick to snap up shares of the company as they are “warming up to the bubble tea market again,” according to Longdley Zephirin, principal and analyst at The Zephirin Group.

In its first public offering of shares, Mixue raised $444 million (£352 million) which was the largest sum of the year for the exchange.

It’s shares rose by almost 30 per cent in early trading giving the company a valuation of over $10 billion (£7.9 billion).

Ernan Cui, a Beijing-based analyst for research firm Gavekal Dragonomics has explained why the company is soaring in popularity.

“People are chasing more cost-efficient products,” she told the Wall Street Journal.

Cui highlighted Mixue’s expansion strategy that saw it focus on increasing its operational footprint in smaller cities where it is hugely popular rather than in major hubs.

The drink and ice cream company began in 1997 when Zhang Hongchao opened his first store selling shaved ice in Henan, a province in Central China’s Yellow River Valley.

Inside world’s poshest McDonald’s in massive ‘McMansion’ with special fancy menu including lobster & lavish dining room

THE world’s fanciest McDonald’s is located inside a 150-year-old colonial mansion, and it even sells lobster rolls.

You might mistake the McMansion for a fine dining restaurant at a first glance.

McDonald’s preserved the original structure to abide by the strict town rules[/caption]

Even after stepping inside, it is hard to believe that this is the same fast food chain everyone loves.

With wooden furniture, beautiful fireplaces and mahogany booths, this McDonald’s would fool anyone to think they’re in a posh tavern.

Even though the menu doesn’t have expensive steaks and vintage wines, it still has distinguished items to offer.

Apart from familiar Big Macs and chicken nuggets, you can spoil yourself with lobster rolls in summer season.

When McDonald’s decided to open in Newport in 1984, the town wasn’t happy with the fast-food giant ruining its aesthetic.

Strict building design restrictions meant McDonald’s had to give up its signature colours and architecture.

The fast-food chain obliged and remodeled an existing structure to fit in better with the town.

They chose the Gore House with its charming window shutters and white columns built by a wealthy local merchant in 1850.

McDonald’s blended in so well, you might even miss it when passing by these days.

The fast-food restaurant went as far as to ditch its famous golden arch that called everyone’s attention.

It is one of the few restaurants to not have a single yellow McDonald’s arch in sight.

But it’s not the only posh McDonald’s in the world with the other one located in Rome with hand-carved statues at the entrance.

With over 40,000 restaurants around the globe, McDonald’s undoubtedly has some bizarre locations and interesting buildings in different countries.

One such restaurant serves food straight out of an abandoned airplane in New Zealand.

Another extraordinary location was dubbed “most breathtaking” McDonald’s in the world for serving food right on the beach with beautiful views of the sea.

But the biggest restaurant to date is located in Orlando, Florida and even has a huge arcade, play area and an exclusive menu offering pizza.

McDonald’s fans left stunned after realising what Sweet ‘n’ Sour is made out of – and it’s made some HATE the sauce

MCDONALDS fans were left stunned after they realised what ingredient is in a popular sauce.

The sauce in question is the Sweet ‘n’ Sour and the mystery ingredient – revealed on breakfast show Jase and Lauren – is so shocking it left one person “shaken to their core”.

Fans of the chain were left shocked after an ingredient of sweet ‘n’ sour sauce was revealed on the Jase and Lauren show[/caption]

Jase tucked into the nuggets and dipped them in the sauce before his co-host told him what it contained[/caption]

In a resurfaced TikTok video, Lauren Phillips treated her co-host Jason Hawkins with nuggets and his favourite sauce.

But he was horrified when she told him what ingredient made the flavour he loved so much.

Lauren asked: “Have you ever thought about what Sweet ‘n Sour sauce is actually flavoured?” While Jase lathered the nuggets in sauce.

She waited for him to take his first bite before she dropped the bombshell, “Would you believe it is actually.. apricot flavour?” she revealed.

A repulsed Jase paused while reality set in and then said: “I hate apricot.. I can taste the apricot now,” and chucked the half-eaten nugget away.

The video has the internet in a spin – with many just as gobsmacked as the host.

Some users weren’t fazed by the ingredient, although others were more hesitant.

One said: “Omg my mum use to make apricot chicken,” and another wrote: “Apricot goes so well with chicken that makes so much sense.”

But a third told of a similar discovery that had spoilt a sauce they once loved.

“Finding out about Caesar salad dressing destroyed my love of it,” they said.

And one woman said in a video that she was “shaken to her core” when she found out about the ingredient.

The official McDonald’s Australia TikTok account also commented and made a stomach-churning suggestion.

“Try dipping your Soft Serve in Sweet and Sour Sauce,” it wrote.

Others claim they’ve known about the true flavour of the sauce for years.

One questioned: “How do people not know this?”

“Sweet n Sour is essentially Apricot jam and white vinegar,” claimed another.

Other ingredients in Sweet ‘n Sour sauce include peach puree, salt, xanthan gum, garlic powder, cellulose gum, dried chilli peppers, onion powder, caramel colour, extract of paprika and more.

This isn’t the only time McDonalds has made the news recently.

Last week we told of a shocking brawl that erupted at the chain leaving two staff hurt.

Alarms wailed and screams filled the air as the tubby lout went berserk during a confrontation in South Wales.
