CSIS Commission Report on North Korea Policy & Extended Deterrence #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

The world is experiencing a number of tectonic shifts due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and related developments that present a perilous landscape for the U.S.-ROK (Republic of Korea) alliance as well as new opportunities for Washington and Seoul to navigate in the coming months. Collectively, these shifts in the strategic landscape call for the United States and its allies to reexamine traditional approaches to the North Korea nuclear issue and devise ways to increase the credibility of U.S. extended deterrence. The election of South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, whose positions on North Korea and regional issues align closely with those of the Biden administration, presents opportunities for the alliance to pursue new initiatives that will enhance the stability, security, and prosperity of the region. A bipartisan, 15-member Commission on the Korean Peninsula, co-chaired by Dr. John J. Hamre and Dr. Joseph S. Nye Jr. has looked at actionable recommendations for strengthening U.S. extended deterrence with South Korea and reexamining North Korea policy. The Commission is made up of former senior national security and diplomatic officials who played leading roles at the State Department, National Security Council, and Defense Department, among others.Join us as members of the Commission discuss recommendations from our report, which will be publicly released on the day of the event. This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.———————————————A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Ocean Security Forum 2023 #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

The Stephenson Ocean Security Project highlights the ways that global security challenges arise from marine resource competition and works towards solutions that support sustainable development, coalition building, and the need for American leadership. This year’s forum will focus on the theme of ‘Natural Security’ and the role that support for resilience, sustainability, and capacity building plays in fostering and building key US partnerships.   The foundational relationship between ecosystem health and human security has been a key discussion plank at both the recent CBD and UNFCCC COPs. The importance of centering this approach in foreign policy has manifested itself clearly in the Pacific over the past year from the announcement of the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness, to the President’s National Security Memorandum on Combatting IUU Fishing, and the more recent announcement of the Pacific Partnership Strategy. A first panel of senior government officials will examine this concept in more detail and describe some of the ways it has matured in the past decade to encompass more tangible processes and outcomes. In addition, we will discuss the recent developments in the Pacific as well as other regions where these concepts may be most readily and successfully applied. A second panel of senior USG officials will consider these concepts and their application in the maritime space through the lens of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing and the mandates of the Maritime Security and Fisheries Enforcement Act. We will also look towards the upcoming 2023 OurOceans Conference and consider opportunities for making significant progress in aligning work there with other major US environmental and foreign policy initiatives.Agenda8:30 – 8:45 am | Check-in and Coffee8:45 – 9:00 a.m. | Welcome and Opening RemarksDr. Whitley Saumweber, Director, Stephenson Ocean Security Project, CSIS9:00 – 9:45 a.m. | Panel Discussion: Natural Security: The Expanding Nexus Between the Environment and National Security Moderated by Dr. Anne Christianson, Center for American ProgressRod Schoonover, CEO and Founder, Ecological Futures GroupSherri Goodman, Chair of the Board, Council on Strategic Risks and Vice Chair, Secretary of State International Security Advisory Board9:45 – 10:00 a.m. | Break10:15 – 11:15 a.m. | Panel Discussion: The Maritime SAFE Act and its Implications for U.S. Foreign Policy Moderated by Dr. Whitley Saumweber, CSIS SOSDr. Maxine Burkett, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Fisheries, and Polar Affairs, Department of StateDr. Kelly Kryc, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Fisheries, National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationRDML Jo-Ann Burdian, Assistant Commandant for Response Policy, U.S. Coast Guard11:15 – 11:30 a.m. | Concluding RemarksThe Stephenson Ocean Security Project was established through generous support from the Phillip Stephenson Foundation.  This forum has been developed in partnership with the CSIS Human Rights Initiative, the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable, World Wildlife Fund, and Oceana. ———————————————A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Government Policies for Open Source Software #CenterForStrategicAndInternationalStudies #CounterTerrorism #CSIS #CSISdc #NationalSecurity #MaryPatriotNews [Video]

Synopsys estimates 97% of software contains open source code that can be viewed, used, modified, and redistributed under an open license. Governments across the globe understand the potential of open source software and since the early 2000s have implemented policies to utilize open source software as a tool for modernization, sovereignty, and economic development. A recent study by the European Commission found that open source software contributed upwards of €95 billion to annual GDP in the European economy and its widespread adoption globally makes open source software a key driver of innovation. A series of recent legislative and executive actions, such as the proposed Securing Open Source Software Act and the Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity, have put the focus in the U.S. on open source software. A CSIS project explored government action on open source software from around the world, compiling a database of national policies, strategies, directives, bills, programs and more dating back to 1999. This event will discuss the project’s findings and the future of open source software policies. This event is done in collaboration with GitHub.———————————————A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world.
