As Locksmiths we know that locking your keys in the car is a frustratingly regular occurrence. It’s far too easy in the hustle and bustle of everyday life to lose your keys and losing your keys in your car or having locked your keys in your trunk is no exception to the rule. But when should you call 911 to unlock your car?

Can 911 unlock my car?

There are few instances where emergency services can unlock your car for you. The clue is in the name, in a true emergency the police will unlock your car. Such emergencies include if there is a child locked in the car or a pet on a hot day for instance. The emergency services will also have no qualms in unlocking any other vehicles whether they belong to whoever called in the emergency or not as it could be a matter of life or death. It’s important to not attempt to unlock the vehicle yourself as breaking a window could cause harm to yourself or another and may cause damage to the car which could lead to further costs down the road.

How to prevent future lockouts?

Locking your keys in the car is not the end of the world as you know a Keytek® Locksmith is able to help you out. However, to prevent any future lock outs our top tips include:

  1. Ensure someone you trust has a spare car key that can come to your rescue.
  2. Keep hold of a spare car key separate from your car keys that can unlock your vehicle but cannot start the ignition. This will grant you access to your car to retrieve your keys but prevents thieves from driving off with your vehicle if it were to fall into the wrong hands.
  3. Avoid putting your keys down in your boot whilst retrieving the shopping or pram for example and get into the habit of putting them in your pocket or keeping them in your hands so as not to accidentally lock them inside.
